Real Food 2: Squash, pork, veggies

My post-workout meal for today. Practice was: bounding exercises, followed by bleacher sprints, then 6 x 100m hill sprints out in the forest. After catching my breath and suppressing the strong urge to empty the contents of my stomach on to the base of a Redwood tree I was kind of hungry so I came home and made this:

Butternut squash, pork sausage, and vegetables

Since I just completed a glycogen-depleting workout and will be strength training later today,  there is some extra carbs from squash in here. I took butternut squash, and sliced it very thin- about 1/4 inch and let it sizzle in some butter till it was crispy on the outside and cooked through. Meanwhile I cooked the organic pork sausage, scooped it out of the pan, then cooked the veggies in the pork fat. Veggies were green beans, summer squash, zucchini, and mushroom.

  1. Tyler what kinds of fruits do you recommend? Are there fruits that don't fit in with the evolutionary diet? I'm transforming my diet to rid of flours and wheat products, especially high fructose corn syrup. I've been drinking a lot of tea with honey and completely cutting out juices and sodas from my diet.

  2. Hi Alyssa -

Congrats on starting and great job with cutting out juice and soda.

Some of my favorite fruits are all types of berries, melons, and bananas. When talking about fruits and an evolutionary diet, the question is more of "how much" rather than "what fruits". Pretty much all fruit is ok, as long as its in the natural form. Berries and melons tend to be the best because they are higher in glucose and lower in fructose. The question of "how much" is a little more complicated because it really depends on your individual goals.

Fruit is rich in vitamins and minerals, but it is also basically pure sugar. For someone trying to lose fat, they would want to limit themselves to 2 servings of fruit per day or less. For athletes, as much fruit as they want is probably fine, as long as they feel good and are staying at their desired level of leanness.

If you have any questions let me know, and keep me posted on how you feel after cutting out sugar and wheat! Also check out my nutrition page: http://evolutionaryhealthsystems.blogspot.com/p/nutrition.html
